Psalm 23
Last week, I heard from many of you about how meditating on Psalm 103 was so life-giving in the midst of a full season, so I thought we’d finish out August sitting with another passage of Scripture.
Today let’s reflect on Psalm 23. This is a familiar passage to most, but I’m going to share The Bible for Everyone translation. I think reading different translations helps us to notice different words and ideas. Feel free to read whatever translation you like, or compare several.
As you read, remember to read through the passage more than one time, and write it down if that is helpful for you. Notice as you read what words stick out to you and how you see God in this Psalm and in your life.
I invite you to take a deep breath. How is your body feeling today? Are you noticing tension anywhere?
Take a few more deep breaths and allow your body to settle and relax. Drop your shoulders, unclench your jaw, and welcome the Holy Spirit.
Psalm 23
My shepherd being Yahweh,
I don’t lack;
he enables me to lie down
in grassy pastures.
He leads me to settled water;
he turns my life back.
He guides me in faithful tracks
for the sake of his name.
Even when I walk in a deathly
dark ravine,
I’m not afraid of bad fortune,
Because you are with me;
your club and your cane -
they comfort me.
You spread a table before me
in front of my adversaries.
You’ve enriched my head with oil;
my cup fills me up.
Yes, goodness and commitment
pursue me all the days
of my life.
I shall go back to Yahweh’s house
for long days.
May you be reminded this week that your good shepherd is Yahweh and that you can trust him to care for you. May you sense the Holy Spirit with you as you navigate the season of life you are in, and may you know that you are never alone.
You are seen. You are known. You are loved.
