Liminal Space

Today, I am moving my son into his college dorm one last time. Somehow, time has zipped past, and we are approaching the finish line of his college days.

It was all new and unfamiliar when we moved him into his dorm four years ago.

Since then, it has become familiar.

We learned what to do and how to do it.

We know how long it will take and what tools we need for it to run smoothly.

We learned to anticipate and navigate the many emotions leading up to move-in day.

And while it has become familiar, it also feels harder this year.

In just a few short months, he will graduate. And then everything will be unfamiliar again.

What will he do?

Where will he live?

What will life be like?

No one knows.

This is true for much of life - it is a mystery until it isn’t.

So, we choose to embrace both the familiar and the unfamiliar.

Both have their place.

Both shape us.

Often, the unfamiliar spaces are the spaces that stretch us the most.

They are the liminal spaces where we grow in ways we never imagined.

They are the spaces where we discover new depths of our story.

So, today, whether you find yourself in territory that feels familiar or in liminal space that feels unfamiliar, remember that God is with you.

Always.
